What happens when you have a tea party and you want to impress your guests with a dish but you're short on time?
Om Ali is a dish prepared in just 10 minutes, does not require fancy ingredients, is eggless and so delicious that your guests will be left wanting more.
Coming to its origin, Om Ali is an Egyptian dessert made with puff pastry, milk, sugar, dry fruits and whipped cream. I learnt this recipe when I was working at a bakery. You can say it's sorta kinda a version of bread pudding but with puffs or croissant.
With pistachios, almonds, cashews, cardamom and rosewater, this dessert will take you to the middle east (only your tastebuds tho)! I love the aroma of rosewater mixed with cardamom. If you haven't had it, add some cardamom and a dash of rosewater to your milk and see for yourself!
Om Ali is not usually served with whipped cream but it was a nice addition. I topped my Om Ali with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and pistachios. You can top yours with whatever you like or have it as it is. Other berries, no berries, cream cheese, just sugar, anything!
Let's get to the recipe-
Ingredients
6-8 Puffs or Croissant
1/3 Cup Mixed Nuts
2 Cups Milk
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
2 Tsp Cardamom powder
1 Tsp Rosewater
3 Cups Heavy Cream
Whipped cream, fresh berries and nuts for topping
Directions
Roughly break your puffs and place them in your baking dish which will also be your serving dish. Sprinkle roughly chopped nuts all over,
In a saucepan pour milk, cream, sugar, rosewater and cardamom. Cook for 10-12 minutes until it comes to a boil. Evenly pour it on the puffs. Let them sit for 10 minutes,
Bake it for 10-12 minutes at 180C
Before serving decorate your dish with whipped cream, nuts and berries.
And it's that simple!
Serve it hot or cold depending on your preference. I like it warm.
